Editorial standards

FLC lessons are meant to be something students, parents, and teachers can rely on. This page explains where our information comes from, how we check it, and what to do if you find a mistake.

Where our information comes from

We build lessons on primary and official sources: government agencies and regulators — like the IRS, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the SEC, the FDIC, the Federal Reserve, and the U.S. Department of Education — and the organizations that set a rule or publish a measure, like FICO for credit scores. Every lesson ends with a list of its sources, so you can check them yourself.

How we check the numbers

• Math in lessons, examples, and calculators comes from the same code, and that code is checked by automated tests every time the site changes.
• People, businesses, and numbers in examples are hypothetical, and we say so.
• Rules and figures that change — tax rates, contribution limits, insurance limits, student loan rules — are marked in each lesson with the date we last checked them.

How we keep lessons up to date

Every January we review each lesson that depends on rules or numbers that change, confirm that our source links still work, and update the “Last reviewed” date shown at the top of every lesson. We also fix problems as soon as we learn about them. All lessons were last reviewed in September 2026.

Education, not advice

We explain how money works so you can make your own decisions. We don't give personal financial, investment, tax, or legal advice, and we never tell you to buy or sell a specific investment or product.

Independence

FLC is free and student-led. We don't run ads, publish sponsored content, or use affiliate links, and no company pays to be mentioned in a lesson.

Written for students

Lessons are written for high school students in plain language: we define terms the first time we use them, show the math step by step, and avoid jargon. Lessons are also mapped to the national and Texas personal finance standards.

Corrections

If you find an error or an out-of-date number, email contact@learnwithflc.org or use the “Tell us” link at the end of any lesson. We check every report, correct confirmed errors, and update the lesson's review date.
